SAP has made it clear that HANA is the foundation for all the company does moving forward. In line with this, SAP S/4 HANA, Cloud Edition is built on HANA’s advanced in-memory platform and, to improve user experience, designed with SAP Fiori, representing the next wave of simplification and innovations across all core business functions — finance, accounting, controlling, procurement, sales, manufacturing, plant maintenance, project system and product lifecycle management, among others — empowering customers to run their entire enterprise in the cloud, in real time using mobile devices.
At bottom, S/4 HANA, cloud edition, represents the culmination of SAP’s efforts — which began in 2010 — to re-tool the entire SAP Business Suite to take full advantage of a HANA-powered cloud.
S/4 HANA features a simplified data model with no materialized aggregates, simplified code (due to the fact that no material aggregates need to be maintained), allowing OLTP and OLAP to run on the same system, yielding great benefits of compression, real time analytics, landscape simplification, and ease of configuration.
In addition, S/4 HANA, cloud edition, seamlessly integrates with SAP’s full array of cloud offerings, including those from SAP companies SuccessFactors, Ariba, Hybris, Fieldglass and Concur.
With SAP S/4 HANA, cloud edition, SAP significantly expands the business scope of its HANA-powered cloud offering, giving customers the opportunity to rapidly deploy hybrid scenarios — combining on-premise and cloud solutions — for unprecedented IT flexibility and accelerated business innovation. Equally vital, S/4 HANA, cloud edition, enables businesses to execute their cloud strategy at their own pace, based on their unique needs, while keeping all the integration and business benefits of existing SAP solutions.
HANA is the cornerstone for SAP customers’ migration to the cloud. The innovative in-memory platform combines transactional and analytical processing in one system, provides IT simplification, rapid transaction processing with real-time analytics and an advanced development environment for SAP (and custom-built) applications.
Powered by HANA, SAP’s cloud offering today includes both public cloud and private cloud delivery and spans the entire cloud-model spectrum — SaaS, PaaS, IaaS and MCaaS.
The depth, breadth and flexibility of SAP’s cloud offering — the ability to run the entire SAP Business Suite, including ERP, in the cloud on HANA — enables SAP customers of all sizes and across diverse industries to embark upon or accelerate their cloud journey in a way that makes the most sense for them.
Bolstered by its sustained progress in the cloud and its next-generation Business Suite (SAP S/4 HANA) milestone, SAP expects its cloud business to grow 7-fold by 2020, reaching $8.6 billion to $9.2 billion by 2020.
Here are a few reasons why SAP S/4 HANA, Cloud Edition, is a real cloud changer:
Unsustainable datacenter costs
Today’s IT landscapes have become increasingly complex and costly, with multiple databases, datamarts and enterprise data warehouses needed to accommodate ever-increasing data volume generated by multiple ERP instances and numerous business applications — CRM, SRM, SCM, etc.
Prior to HANA, performing meaningful analysis on big data meant either investing in more server/database hardware and/or reducing the volume of data to be analyzed. The former option is expensive, the latter inadequate.
In either scenario, the duplication of data drives up costs (hardware and maintenance), compounds latency issues, and ensures the traditional datacenter model goes by way of the dodo bird.
Leveraging advances in hardware — multi-core architecture, massive parallel scaling with many blades, 64bit address space, 100GB/s data throughput, etc. — and incorporating SAP’s breakthrough in-memory technology and innovative parallel processing architecture, HANA brings this age-old, expensive and inefficient data volume/server volume war of attrition to an end.
Ever-increasing data volumes are pushing the data center into the cloud, but regardless of its physical location, the traditional, server-heavy, disc-dependant datacenter model is simply unsustainable.
Powered by HANA, a multi-tiered architecture, using cheap storage, is the future.
Real-time analytics, anytime, anywhere
The unrelenting onslaught of big data, the mobility-first business imperative, and the drive for real-time analytics anytime, anywhere make cloud adoption a top priority for businesses of all sizes.
Deriving actionable insights — correlations, trends, outliers, etc. — in real time from terabytes of big data — operational, transactional, structured, unstructured — is vital to success for all businesses operating in today’s increasingly global, hyper-competitive, always-on, Internet-of-everything business world.
The problem is, most IT organizations lack the data-processing speed required to meet this demand in a strategic, timely manner.
Speed of data processing translates into agility, which in turn, drives productivity, efficiency, innovation and, ultimately, market share growth.
With columnar storage, advanced in-memory compressions, and unmatched processing power, SAP on HANA is fast, empowering businesses to run in real time — to transact, analyze and predict instantly on a single platform at the moment of opportunity.
HANA represents a fundamentally new architecture. By combining database, data processing, and application platform capabilities in-memory, the HANA-powered cloud affords businesses an unprecedented opportunity to innovate at an unprecedented and unparalleled scope and pace.
Partners lead the way
The importance of SAP partners is nothing new when it comes to SAP achieving market-growth goals, but they are absolutely essential if SAP is to realize its 7x cloud growth by 2020.
Back in 2013 Computerworld reported SAP SVP of OEM and Rapid Deployment Solutions Steven Birdsall’s observation that “SAP doesn't have the capability to deliver on its ambitious plans without the help of partners […] customers are embracing innovation much, much faster than what our [SAP’s] capability of delivering it alone is. That means that our partners have to be involved.”
More pointedly (prophetically even) Birdsall pointed out that in two year’s time, half of all SAP HANA customers will be via partners, who will experience “triple-digit” growth as a result of their cloud-based, HANA-powered offering.
According to IDC, as reported by CRN , HANA generated $4.2 billion in revenue for SAP partners in 2012. IDC projects that number will climb to $10.5 billion by 2017.
In an article recently posted in SCN , SAP Vice President of Cloud Solutions and Head of Co-Innovation Sven Denecken states that “more than 50% of the SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA projects were managed by partners.” Denecken maintains that these partners are ready, willing and able to resell and service SAP S/4 HANA for existing and new joint customers.
A complete, HANA-powered cloud offering
Migration to the cloud is not a question of if but a complex riddle comprised of when, what, which order, how much and what flavor. Facing an inevitable cloud future, CIOs are redesigning their IT strategies in a way that solves this riddle — mapping out a cloud migration plan that maximizes the payoff from existing technology while capitalizing on the cost and resource benefits of cloud-based services.
SAP S/4 HANA, cloud edition, is tailored for today’s hybrid environment, enabling businesses to capitalize on the scalability and cost-effectiveness of cloud computing (private, public and hosted) while retaining the strategic value of keeping on premise some server operations, select business applications and sensitive data.
